Author's Purpose
In The Great Gatsby Fitzgerald showed a representation of the American dream while also showing how money can overpower love.
Genre
The Great Gatsby is historical fiction. It is accurate to the time period (1920's) but it is also fiction.
Historical Context
"I bought a dozen volumes on banking and credit and investment securities, and they stood on my shelf in red and gold like new money from the mint, promising to unfold the shining secrets that only Midas and Morgan and Mæcenas knew" (Chapter 1).
This allusion is referring to Midas that turned everything to gold, J.P Morgan a financier, as well as, Maecenas, a roman patron that was very wealthy. This plays into Fitzgerald's Obsession with money.
"And inside, as we wandered through Marie Antoinette music-rooms and Restoration salons, I felt that there were guests concealed behind every couch and table, under orders to be breathlessly silent until we had passed through" (Chapter 5).
