elements
an element is a pure substance that cannot be broken down into 2 or more simpler substances by chemical processes

all the atoms which make up the molecule, are made of the same element
e.g. a hydrogen molecule contains 2 hydrogen atoms that are chemically combined (it is diatomic). the symbol H2 is used to represent a hydrogen molecule. the subscript "2" after the chemical symbol for hydrogen indicates that 2 hydrogen atoms are chemically combined
compounds
a compound is a pure substance containing 2 or more elements that are chemically combined in a fixed ratio
e.g. water (H2O) is a compound. it is made up of 2 elements, hydrogen and oxygen. only 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom can make a water molecule. the ratio of hydrogen atoms to oxygen atoms in water is always 2:1. Changing this ratio will give a different compound. for instance, adding one more oxygen atom gives a ratio of 2:2 and the compound hydrogen peroxide.
composition of compounds
a compound may be made of molecules or another type of particles called ions. ions are electrically charged particles. an ion carries either positive or negative charges.
properties of a compound
a compound has different properties from the elements that form it. for instance, magnesium burns in oxygen to form a compound called magnesium oxide. magnesium oxide has different properties from magnesium and oxygen
