Communities
Key Terms
Ecosystem
Community of living organisms interacting with their environment
Two or more populations of organisms in their environment
Community
Two or more populations of organisms
Population
All the same/closely related species of an organism in an area
Interdependence
All organisms in an ecosystem depend on each other.
If one population rises or falls it can affect the whole ecosystem
e.g. Grass --> Rabbit --> Fox
All organisms rely on each other (interdependence)
Levels of organisation within an ecosystem
Producer
Plants and algae, which photosynthesise
Primary consumer
Herbivores, which eat producers
Secondary Consumer
Carnivores, which eat primary consumers
Tertiary consumer
Also carnivores, which eat secondary consumers
Abiotic factors affecting the abundance and distribution of organisms
Light Intensity
Some plants = evolved for optimum growth in bright sunlight
e.g. Cacti
Orchids = evolved for optimum growth in darker conditions
Temperature
Animals & plants have evolved to grow at their optimum temperatures
