The Odyssey
Book 1; Athena holds council with Zeus in hopes to help Odysseus who is stuck on Calypso's island, thus Hermes is sent to Calypso to inform her that she must let Odysseus go, she does. Telemachus then meets Mentes, who is Athena in disguise, and she tells him that Odysseus is alive. Then Penelope is disturbed by a song and Telemachus announces his intention to hold a meeting with the suitors tomorrow.
Telemachus speaks with them and during the meeting Zeus sends down two eagles to attack the crowd, a Ithacan mentions that this is a prophecy that Odysseus is to return home. Then, after praying to and receiving the help of Athena, Telemachus sets sail for Pylos.
Telemachus arrives at Pylos and meets with King Nestor, the ruler of Pylos, and Nestor tells Telemachus the story of the attack and aftermath of Troy. Then Nestor tells Telemachus to go see King Menelaus of Sparta and Nestor sends his son, Pisistratus, with him.
Telemachus and Pisistratus find Menelaus and Helen in Sparta. Menelaus then tells the story of the Trojan war and expresses grief for those he had lost, including Odysseus, then everybody is overcome with grief until Helen drugs them all and they no longer can feel grief. The suitor then find out about Telemachus' journey and make plans to kill him upon his return.
Zeus and Athena discuss Odysseus once again, thus Hermes is sent down to aid Odysseus' escape from Calypso and Athena is sent to guard Telemachus. Calypso lets Odysseus go and he almost reaches land on a raft when Poseidon interferes and Odysseus almost drowns, then Odysseus finds land and rests in some bushes at the mouth of a river.
Athena inspires the princes of the land Odysseus is now on to do some laundry. After she does Odysseus shows himself to her and the princess tells Odysseus the way to her palace. In a temple outside of the palace Odysseus prays to Athena
Athena then hides Odysseus in magic mist and leads him inside the palace and he reveals himself, in disguise, to the king and queen. He is given a warm welcome to the palace including a bed and food.
The king arranges a feast and a boat for Odysseus. During the feast a blind poet sings about fight between Achilles and Odysseus. Odysseus then starts crying but the king notices and suggests they engage in sports, they do and the princes taunt Odysseus into joining in a discus competition and he beats them by a large margin. They return and Odysseus requests the poet to sing of The Wooden Horse when Odysseus begins to cry again the king asks who he is.
Odysseus reveals himself in his entirety and begins telling the story of his encounters on the way home from Troy. He starts with his interactions with the Cicones, then the lotus eaters, and the Cyclops. During the encounter with the Cyclops Odysseus blinds one of them and the Cyclops calls upon his father Poseidon for revenge.
