feminism is for everybody pt. 1
Misconceptions/ weakness of feminism
misconceptions: "man hating"; not understanding and/or dismissing sexism; women want equality with men; only for white privileged women; responding to male domination only through anger
problems: people learn about feminism from patriarchal mass media; even though black women participated in feminism movement, they were not the stars or the ones who gained media attention; we cannot just mold ourselves to fit in the existing white supremacist patriarchal capitalist society
feminism tranferred to academic circles and remains something that people need education on something that is not always readily and easily available to many people
Important concepts like delving into your internalized misogyny and sisterhood alliances have lost their traction; many people throw around the feminist term derogatorily or haphazardly thus it begins to lose it's true meaning and traction
Internalized misogny / sister venom
When white women get into power, they often abandon their previous feminist thinking to take advantage of the situation for themselves; maximizing their freedom and simultanously exploiting lower class working women at home
before women can change patriarchy we must change ourselves and make ourselves aware
Consciousness raising provided the strength to stand up to patriarchal standards
Consciousness raising groups emphasized taking turns so everyone's opinions would be herd; after everyone had spoken at least once, discussions and debates would take place
Sexist thinking leads women to judge each other and tear each other down. Sexist thinking towards other women furthers the patriarchy
Men's place in the patriarchy and the importance of their allyship
Males were socialized to believe in sexist thinking; they value from the patriarchy and therefore less likely to challenge something they benefit from
"Feminist conscious raising for males is essential to revolutionary movement as female groups" If males had been taught what sexism was and how it applies to them, it would be impossible to paint feminism as man hating. Without males as an ally, we will not progess.
What feminism is
