Acoustic sounding
Radar scanner is a way of recording the type of sediment. Very strong sound signals are emitted towards the sediment and the sound waves bounce off the sediment material back to a receiver. Scientist recorded way that waves travel through different materials and as such the nature of the
sediment can be determined.
Grain size
Measuring size of grain in a sediment sample provides much info about origin of sediment and conditions of water column when materials settled, Geologists developed scale to define the different particle sizes in sediments called Wentworth scale, arranged from a boulder (biggest) to clay particle (smallest), measured according to diameter of particle, method of measurement uses different sieve sizes
Sediment as a resource
Many countries mine sand and gravel for construction industry, off Scotland's coast coal in mined from ocean bed, off SA's coast heavy sands mined along Richards bay coast
