Lack of Clean Water & Sanitation Causes
Water Pollution
- Nonpoint source water is hard to regulate and is the leading source of water pollution. It is tricky to regulate because it is difficult to locate.
- Water pollution is caused by water dissolving the substances in it, causing it to spread and pollute.
- Ground water is used by nearly 40% of Americans. Pestisides and fertilizers can contaminate ground water, especially in rural areas. Purifying this type of water can be costly and sometimes impossible.
- Almost half of America's rivers and streams and one third of lakes are polluted. This water is present in more than 60% of US homes.
- 80% of the world's water waste is dumped back into environments, mostly untreated, jeopardizing the health of many.
- The ocean is constantly absorbing carbon from the air, causing it to pollute. Oil spills are also a big factor in this as well.

Infrastructure

- Creating better infrastructure is costly, but necessary for all to have access to clean water.
- Americas drinking water infrastructure includes 2.2 million pipes.

Poverty
- Poverty and the lack of clean water go hand-in-hand. Poverty causes a lack of clean water by not having the money to create safe drinking and bathing water. Unsanitary water causes poverty because in many areas around the world, women are relied on to collect water throughout the day, taking away from their time to get an education. This creates a disadvantage.
- In the US alone, nearly 34 million people live in poverty.
- Millions are trapped in poverty due to unfit and unsanitary water.
- Around 9.2% of the world lives in poverty.
- 60% of Nigerias rural population lives more than 30 minutes away from a clean water source.
- Access to clean water could improve physical health as well as education. Less children would be developmentally and physically stunted if they had access to clean water.

Education & Awareness
- Educating children and adults on the water crisis plants a seed for better drinking water today & tomorrow.
- 1 out of 3 schools lack access to safe drinking water. This predominantly impacts girls and young women around the world.
- The source of fresh water is very low, less than 2%. Only 1% of that is available drinking water.
- The less time a person has to collect water means they have more time for an education.
- Companies, governements, and individuals who have access can spread awareness of the water crisis, pushing others to act on change.
