Endocrinology - Coggle Diagram
Endocrinology
function
maintains the internal environment (body temp., body fluid, volume, osmolarity)
-
-
-
-
hormones
-
receptors
when the receptor interacts with the hormone, it will trigger a response in the cell (location can vary)
-
-
-
-
glands
specialized cell that secretes hormones into the blood to circulate to specific target cells with receptors for the hormones
-
-
-
important players
the hypothalamus
found at the base of the brain, above the pituitary, but below the thalamus
has many regions made but of nerve cell bodies (nuclei) that controls the release of hormones from the pituitary gland
controls homeostasis and other behaviors such as thirst, hunger and sexual behavior
to perform these functions, the hypothalamus receives all kinds of info such as metabolism, hormonal, temperature and neural info
releases many inhibiting/releasing hormones that causes the anterior pituitary gland to release or inhibit another hormones
this is saying one hormone from hypothalamus can affect the hormone release activity of the pituitary

The pituitary
-
function
anterior pituitary
-
some anterior hormones control growth of the ovaries and testes as well as their reproductive functions
-
-
-
the thyroid gland
-
-
-
-
secretion of T3 and T4
when TSH is released from the pituitary gland, it will bind to the receptor on the membrane of the epithelial cell, stimulating many reactions
-
-
when T3 and T4 are secreted into the blood, they will feedback into the hypothalamus and pituitary
-
-
-
Diseases
too much of this hormone can lead to diseases in infants and adults (however not essential for life)
-
-
-
the parathyroid glands
found on the posterior (back) side of the thyroid and is 6 mm long, 3 mm wide and 2 mm thick
