Observational Techniques
Naturalistic:
-
Evaluation:
S - High external validity, findings can be generalised to real life
W - Replication is difficult, extraneous and confounding variables are hard to control
Controlled:
Ppts are invited into a lab setting where behaviour is watched and recorded within a structured environment
-
Covert:
Ppts are unaware they are the focus of the study and their behaviour is being observed - must be in the public setting to maintain ethics
Evaluation:
S - Demand characteristics removed, high internal validity
-
-
Participant:
-
Evaluation:
S - Increased external validity, researcher gets an insight into the study
-
Non-Participant:
Researcher remains outside of the group where behaviour is being monitored - maintains an objective viewpoint
