Sampling
Population and Sample:
-
Stratified:
When the composition of the sample reflects the proportions of people in certain cub groups within the target population/wider population
-
-
-
Population - a large group of individuals and target population - a subset of the general population
Evaluation:
Systematic:
S - Objective, researcher has no influence over who is chosen
W - Time consuming, volunteers may refuse to take part
Stratified:
-
W - Stratification is not perfect, strata cannot reflect all the ways that people are different, so complete representation is not possible
Opportunity:
S - Convenient, less costly in terms of money and time
-
Volunteer:
S - easy, requires minimal effort for the researcher, not time consuming
W - volunteer bias, may attract a certain profile of people
Random:
-
W - Time consuming, may end up with an unrepresentative sample, ppts may refuse to take part
