Self-Report Techniques
Open Q:
No fixed set of answers - respondents are free to answer in any way (qualitative data)
Closed Q:
Fixed number of responses - can be likert/rating scale/fixed choice (quantitative data)
Structured I:
Evaluation:
S - Easy to replicate
S - Reduces differences between interviewers
W - Cannot deviate from the topic/explain answers - limits richness of data
Involves identical pre determined questions being read to ppts in the same order
Unstructured I:
Evaluation:
S - More flexibility
W - Interviewer bias
W - Analysis is not not as straightforward - hard to draw conclusions
Informal discussion on a particular topic - follow up questions asked (allows elaboration)
Semi-Structured I:
Combination of structured/unstructured - set of questions with follow ups
Questionnaire Evaluation:
S - Cost effective
S - Reduced effort - can be completed without researcher present
S - Data easy to analyse (especially CQ) - leads to stats testing and comparisons through graphs
W - Social desirability bias
W - Acquiescence bias
W - Fatigue/sabotage results in invalid responses
