UK Challenges Revision - O Block 2022

Challenge 1

Challenge 2

Challenge 3

Challenge 4

UK population is increasing in the future? Why

Migration - people move to the UK to take advantages of well paid jobs.

Natural increase - when the birth rate is higher than the death rate - population increases.

Population Pyramids

4 pieces of information

Life expectancy - taller pyramid = higher LE.

Birth rate - wider base = higher BR.

Death rate - wider upper sections = lower DR.

Infant Mortality Rate - Difference between bar 1 and 2. Bigger difference = higher IMR.

The Governmemnt will need to provide more services to meet the needs of a growing population - e.g. more schools, more hospitals, more roads.

Due rising population - the demand for energy will increase this will mean new energy sources will need to be found. We should also try and save energy.

Impacts on ecosystems - pg. 9 and 10

With rising populations more houses will be needed - this will mean a loss of farmland/forest land = loss of habitats.

With more people, demand for water will increase. This could cause a loss of water in rivers.

More food demand could mean greater use of chemicals e.g. fertilisers, which damage ecosystems

Increased demand for energy - more fossil fuel use and so greater pollution.

Greenfield Sites

Brownfield Sites

Advantages

Advantages

Disadvantages

Disadvantages

Land closer to the city centre, reduces urban sprawl, services may already be there.

Land may be polluted, constrained by previous land use, un-attractive for houses.

Edge of cities - good for familes, freedom to design as you wish

Urban sprawl, large distance to travel to work.

Transport

How to encourage people to drive less and use public transport more.

Public Transport

Cycling

Congestion Charge

London charge - makes driving less popular, people use their cars less.

Increasing the number of services and reduce the cost.

Boris Bikes, showers at work, cycle to work schemes

Two speed economy

Evidence for two speed economy

Mnanagement strategies

House prices are higher in the south than the north

More investment than the south than north

More large scale building projects in south e.g. The Shard

High Speed rail links - connect northern regions to the south

Government is undertaking 'levelling up' - trying to create more jobs in the North

Migration

Reasons why people leave the uk

Reasons why people move to the UK

Climate - often for retirement

Study abroad

To be with friends and family

Jobs often higher paid than elsewhere

Healthcare

Education levels and access to it.

Why are some people not happy about migration?

Some people feel migrants take jobs that British workers could have

Some people do not like how their town has changed

Migrants are often hard working and contribute to the local economy
