Pay and Wages System
PAYMENT OF WAGES
Employment laws says a wage period may not be longer than a month; may be paid often but not more than a month
Wages must be paid no later than seventh day after the last day of wage period 24 th day (not longer than one month) and a written statement showing the total wages earned and any deductions made must be given to the workers
Failure to pay wages within the time limits set by the Employment Act 1955 can be considered as breach of contract by the employer.

Definition
According to the Employment Act, wages is defined as basic wages and other payments in cash payable to an employee for work done in respect of his contract of service , but does NOT include the following :

2. On the written request (permission) of the employee and with the approval of the Director General of Labor ,for the purpose of:
Cost of accommodation, food , services supplied to the
employee by the employer.

Payment to a superannuation (retirement), welfare or
thrift scheme.

Deduction of any payment of wages made by mistake to the employee during the preceding three months.

Choosing a System

Traditionally, organization of working hours required that all workers in an establishment work the same hours. E.g. in the public sector, 8 am to 4 pm or in the private sector, 9 am to 5 pm
Recently, employers experimenting with Alternative Work Schedule (AWS) designed to increase worker motivation. Some call it flexi-time systems.

Problems

Workers' health affected (sleeping difficulties, eating habits change)
Women and night work
the Employment Act says, “no female employee shall work in industrial and agricultural undertaking between 10 pm to 5am.”
Currently, the Dept. of Labor has exempted all employers from this restriction provided (i) shift allowance be given, (ii) free transport and (iii) opportunity for rotation of shifts.

PIECE-RATED SYSTEM

Disadvantages
Quality of output may be effected due to eagerness to
increase output. Workers may sacrifice quality.

Can cause significant friction between workers and the management. Too low rates workers will have to strain output too high rates workers has no motivation to put forward his best effort.

TIME-RELATED SYSTEM
Wages are paid for a set of period of work on an hourly , weekly and monthly basis.

Advantages :
- easy to understand and administer.
- worker is assured of a steady income.
- Suitable where there is no direct relationship between productivity and performance
- Output of a job cannot be quantified easily.

DEFINITION
Wage

An employer can terminate an employee’s contract of service without notice providing he pays the worker a sum equal to the amount of wages he would have received during the notice period.

- In return for their work, employees are
paid agreed amount of remuneration.
- Employers also provide some payments to motivate workers to maximize their output.
