What were the successes and failures of the LON in the 1920s?
Successes
Refugees
400,000 prisoners were returned to their homes
Refugee crisis in Turkey (1922), when hundreds of thousands of refugees had to live together, the LON worked to stamp out cholera, smallpox and dysentery in the camps .
The Refugees committee was constantly short of funds and its work became even more difficult in the 1930s as the authority of the league declined.
Working Conditions
It banned poisonous white lead from paint
It limited hours that small children were allowed to work
In some countries, a regulation was passed to establish a maximum of a 48 hour week and 8 hour days (the vote was not passed as some countries thought that it would damage the industry).
It campaigned for employers to improve working conditions.
The ILO was limited by lack of funds and power. It could do little more than to name and shame countries or organisations that broke regulations
Health
Collected statistical information
Sponsored research into into infectious diseases (Singapore, Vienna, Denmark) which helped develop vaccines against Leprosy and Malaria
so successful it was continued as World Health Organisation
