Formative
Formative assessments could be FOR and OF learning.
Summative
Summative assessments are "assessment OF learning"
Summative Assessment (Xueqing Fu)
The goal of summative assessment is to evaluate student learning at the end of an instructional unit by comparing it against some standard or benchmark. Summative assessments are often high stakes, which means that they have a high point value. Examples of summative assessments include: a midterm exam. a final project.
Summative assessment examples:
End-of-term or midterm exams.
Cumulative work over an extended period such as a final project or creative portfolio.
End-of-unit or chapter tests.
Standardised tests that demonstrate school accountability are used for pupil admissions; SATs, GCSEs and A-Levels.
Diagnostic (Alyssa Wolverton)
This type of assessment is used to "diagnose" students. In order to create an engaging and tailored unit, teachers may use a
pre-test
to evaluate prior knowledge. A diagnostic assessment may also shine light on what needs to be focused on for the class.
This could be a pen and paper test, a journal entry, an interview or reflection with the student or class, and even educational graphs.
In early childhood these could be drawings the kids make using a thematic prompt such as their Halloween costume or things they saw during a field trip or experiment. Then we interview the kids about their illustration and write the entry for them.
This is a great way to asses if children have grasped a concept. Often, this is where we see bigger developmental milestones such as students who remember and enjoy the process of listening to a prompt, responding, and sharing and even mock writing their thoughts. Other students are glad to color their favorite video game character and it shows they are not ready to be assessed on literacy or comprehension skills.
The diagnostic pre-assessment is a FORMATIVE assessment
This would be an assessment FOR learning because it enables the teacher to create targeted lessons, increasing student sucess
In the virtual classroom, we have used Smarty Ants. It is an app that is available across desktop, mobile, and smart devices. It has a diagnosttic assessment at the beggining of every student's game play. The teacher can monitor progress and areas of struggle. The pre-assessment places the child in the appropriate "level" to reinforce learning, and pushing the child to higher order concepts as they [progress.](

Examples of performance assessments include composing a few sentences in an open-ended short response, developing a thorough analysis in an essay, conducting a laboratory investigation, curating a portfolio of student work, and completing an original research paper.
The purpose of a performance assessment is to improve the student learning experience and evaluate the effectiveness of lesson plans. These assessments measure how well a student can apply the knowledge they've learned, not if they can recall the knowledge.

Classroom assessment is generally divided into three types: assessment for learning, assessment of learning and assessment as learning.
Assessment as learning occurs when students are their own assessors. Students monitor their own learning, ask questions and use a range of strategies to decide what they know and can do, and how to use assessment for new learning.
What are examples of assessment as learning?
Frequent progress monitoring is an example of assessments for learning, where a student's academic performance is regularly assessed between benchmarks to determine if the current instruction and intervention is positively impacting student achievement or if adjustments need to be implemented.
Assessment is a key component of learning because it helps students learn.
