Quality control
= making sure that the quality of a product meets specialized quality performance criteria.
Advantages
stop faulty products reaching the customer
less responsibility on production workers to check quality.
satisfied customer needs
Disadvantages
may be time consuming as the process of inspecting the goods of service cost money.
Quality assuranc
e= a method of working for businesses that takes into account customers wants when standardizing quality.
Advantages
workers feel more motivated as they are given more responsibility
reduce cost because there is no inspectors
less low quality products to be given out to customers
Disadvantages
may be time consuming because staffs would have to be trained to maintain quality
workers may not like it and they may lose wages due to checking If they are paid at piece rate.
Total quality management
= a managerial approach that focuses on quality and aims to improve the effectiveness,flexibilit and competitiveness of the business
Advantages
critically analyse all processes to remove waste and inefficiencies.
find improvements and develop measure of performance.
focus clearly on customer needs
Disadvantages
there will be training and development costs of the new system
TQM will only work if there is commitment from the entire business.
stress is placed on the process and not the product
Quality circle
= groups of workers meeting regularly to solve problems and discuss work issues
Advantages
motivate workers as their views are valued and make contribution to decisions.
ideas generated have more chance of being effective as they come from workers
Disadvantages
only effective if suggested solutions are implemented which is outside the control of workers
risk of some time and money wasted having employees pulled off main role to participate in quality circles.
Kaizen
= it means continuous improvement in Japanese.
eliminating wastes (eg. time water when workers move unnecessarily in the workplace).
continuous improvements (to improve efficiency and quality).
