Greener Homes program: SPACE AND WATER HEATING
Furnaces are not eligible under the Canada Greener Homes Grant. The only exception is when you reside in an off-grid community, please review the information on north and off-grid communities if it applies.
GROUND SOURCE HEAT PUMPS
Two grants are available for ground source heat pump (geothermal system):
1) the installation of a full system
2) the replacement of the heat pump unit.
Criteria:
In order to be eligible to receive a grant for this equipment, the following criteria must be met:
Installation: Your ground source heat pump unit must be installed by a licensed and trained professional. When using a licensed professional, it is highly recommended that you obtain proof of their licence to install equipment in your province or territory
Attestation: It is highly recommended that you ask the licensed and trained professional to sign an attestation form that the installation has been completed according to the CSA standard—ANSI/CSA/IGSHPA C448 SERIES
Eligible product list: Your new ground source heat pump must be on a list of eligible products (view below). All eligible model lists are available in an online searchable or csv format. The lists will be periodically updated to ensure homeowners have access to grants for all equipment models available that meet Greener Homes performance criteria.
Purchase location: All ground source heat pump equipment must be purchased in Canada. Online purchases are only eligible if they are ordered from an online distributor in Canada.
^Performance Criteria^:
Equipment:
Install a ground source heat pump—full system
Energy Performance Criteria
The system capacity must be ≤ 40 kW.
Open systems
Heating COPh ≥ 3.6 with 10°C entering water
Cooling COPc ≥ 4.75 with 15°C entering water
Closed loop systems
Heating COPh ≥ 3.1 with 0°C entering water
Cooling COPc ≥ 3.93 with 25°C entering water

Many homes in moderate climates can rely on heat pumps to heat or cool their homes year-round. In colder climates, a cold-climate heat pump is more effective and reduces the need for a supplementary heating source. A heat pump is an electrically driven device that extracts heat from a low temperature place and delivers it to a higher temperature place.
Heat pumps in general can come at a higher cost compared to other heating systems due to the number of components in the system.
Your new heat pump must be installed by a licensed trained professional and be on one of the eligible list of products below in order to be eligible for a grant. All eligible model lists are available in an online searchable or csv format. The lists will be periodically updated to ensure homeowners have access to grants for all equipment models available that meet the Canada Greener Homes Grant performance criteria.
AIR AND COLD CLIMATE HEAT PUMPS
For air source heat pumps, there are two levels of grants depending on the equipment installed.
Criteria:
The following installation requirements must be met:
Installation: Your air and cold climate heat pump unit must be installed by a licensed and trained professional.
Attestations: It is highly recommended that homeowners get two attestations from the contractor:
Form 1—Before accepting the quote from a licensed professional, it is highly recommended that you obtain proof of their licence to install equipment in your province or territory
Form 2—that the unit has been sized for the entire house
Eligible product lists:
Your new heat pump must be on the list of eligible products (view below). All eligible model lists are available in an online searchable or csv format. The lists will be periodically updated to ensure homeowners have access to grants for all equipment models available that meet the Canada Greener Homes Grant performance criteria.
Purchase location:
All equipment must be purchased in Canada. Online purchases are only eligible if they are ordered from an online distributor in Canada.
Performance criteria
Equipment:
Air source heat pump (ASHP) or cold climate air source heat pumps (ccASHP)
Install a complete ENERGY STAR certified new or replacement air source heat pump (ASHP) system or a variable capacity cold climate air source heat pump (ccASHP) system. The system must be intended to service the entire home. (See Note below the table)
Energy efficiency performance criteria
The newly installed system must meet the following criteria:
minimum total rated heating capacity at 8.3 °C of 3.52 kW (12,000 Btu/h)
GRANT AMOUNT: $2,500
HSPF (AHRI Climate Region Zone IV) ≥ 10
two indoor heads ductless unit
Your new heat pump must be on the list of eligible products
Quebec and Nova Scotia residents: your new heat pump must be on this list of eligible products
In addition, the cold climate air source heat pump (ccASHP) system must meet the following criteria:
compressor must be of variable capacity with three or more distinct operating speeds, or continuously variable speed
GRANT Amount: $2,500
COP ≥ 1.8 at -15 °C (5 °F) (at maximum capacity operation);
Capacity maintenance (Max -15 °C (5 °F)/Rated 8.3 °C (47 °F)) ≥ 70%
Air source heat pump (ASHP)
Install a complete ENERGY STAR certified — new or replacement air source heat pump (ASHP) system, intended to service the entire home. (See Note below the table)
These units are not available for Quebec or Nova Scotia residents.
