this story is known as kupe me te wheke or in english kupe and the octopus. Kupe was a rangatira in his tribe in hawaiki and a fisherman for his tribe and he would head to the sacred fishing ground when the moon was out and tides were calm and return by morning with a waka full of kai moana of all sorts for the tribe but one night early in the morning before the rising of the sun kupa lowered his line but did not receive a tug so he pulled his hook from the sea to find the bait has vanished and hadn't caught a fish throughout the entire morning and hadn't returned with a single fish and the tribe was upset and thought kupe had disrespected tangaroa so the next morning kupe set out to find out what is happening to the fish and his bait, the next morning kupe went to fish and lowered his line once again but to no tug he raised his hook and found his bait had disappeared again but found a slimy substance on his hook and noticed it belonged to a octopus so kupe knew it was meaningless to continue fishing so he returned to shore kupe had knowledge of a chief who is in ownership of a pet octopus so kupe asked if his pet knows the octopus responsible for the vanishing of his bait muturangi looked at
