Are you solving the right problems?
The slow elevator problem
Problem: elevator is to slow
Solution:install a new lift, upgrade the motor or the algorithm
Refraiming problem: the wait is annoying
Solution: put up mirrors, play music, etc
Another solution: staggering peoples lunch breaks
Problems are typically multicausal and can be addressed in many ways
Its been proved that companies struggle trying to figure out what the real problems are and not how to solve them.
Most companies strongly agreed that they were bad at problem diagnosis and this flaw carried significant costs.
What they need are tools that dont require the entire organizzation to undergo weeks-long training programs.
Seven practices for effective refraiming:
Establish legitimacy
Bring outsider into the discussion
Get people´s definitions in writting
Ask what´s missing
Consider multiple categories
Analyze positive exceptions
Question the objective
Powerful as refraiming can be, it takes time and practice to get good at it
As you start to woork more with the method, urge your team to trust the process, and be prepared for it to feel messy and confusing at times
A checklist for problem diagnosis tends to discourage actual thinking so its better if you dont use it
But the best you can do is combine reframing with real-world testing
The next time you face a problem, start by refraiming it, but dont wait too long before getting out of the building to observe your costumers and prototype your ideas
