Chemical equations
Balancing Symbol Equations There must be the same number of atoms on both sides of the equation CH4 + 4O2 goes to 2H2O +CO2 C=1 O=4 H=4
A chemical reaction can be shown by using a
word equation.
e.g. magnesium + oxygen magnesium oxide
On the left-hand side are the reactants, and
the right-hand side are the products.
They can also be shown by a symbol
equation.
e.g. 2Mg + O2 2MgO
CH4 + 4O2 2H2O + CO2
Equations need to be balanced, so the same
number of atoms are on each side. To do this,
-
Mixtures, Chromatography and Separation
-
Metals and non-metals
-
Metals are strong, malleable, good conductors of electricity and heat. They bond metallically.
Non-Metals
Are dull, brittle, and not always solids at room temperature
