Giftedness
Characteristics
-
-
-
(5) Impatience with the lack of agility and physical development to carry out solutions to problems they readily visualise.
-
(6) Awareness of inconsistencies between the ideal and real behaviour. They readily visualise hypocrisy.
About
Gifted students have
(1) advanced executive skills in planning, learning and carrying out a given task,
(2) insight to novel ideas and situations
(3) conceptual and practical decision-making skills.
-
Strategies
(2) Learning environment should remain safe and inclusive for gifted students to have a voice and feel a sense of identity / belonging.
-
(4) Provide opportunities for gifted students to engage in social activities to hone their collaboration skills.
-
(5) Work with other teachers / councillors within the school to provide a more holistic support and to be able to tap on one another’s knowledge / expertise to manage the gifted students.
-
Advantages
-
(1) Gifted students may be able to guide teachers to check on their peers’ work to provide quick feedback.
-
Challenges
(5) May not respond well when there are inaccuracies in their own thinking because they are rather used to getting everything right.
(6) May not like why things must be done or presented in a certain way (think ‘O’ levels). E.g. solidus notation
(4) May confuse the other students with their (sometimes) non-conventional way of understanding things.
-
-
(1) Gifted students may be outcasted for being different and thus they are unable to work collaboratively.
Considerations
(1) Giftedness does not mean that they are good at everything. We have to be mindful of our own expectations and ensure that they are reasonable.
(2) The same strategy does not necessarily work on all cases of giftedness as they may be part of different domains.
-
(4) How to value-add to the gifted child’s current understanding and gain more depth in the content.
(6) Can there be too differentiated instructions? Will the other children be demotivated when they see what the gifted child is doing?
