Theory Connection
Dramaturgy Theory
Dramaturgy is a social theory created by sociologist Ervin Goffman who stated that people have two sociological profiles in their lives, one being the frontstage (Public life) and the other being the backstage (Private life).
The frontstage phase of a person’s life takes place in a social setting on the basis of human interaction. Front stage behavior is influenced by societal, cultural and internalized norms, and the expectations of one’s behavior based on the setting and who they’re interacting with.
The backstage is the private life of a person and who they actually are. When people engage in “backstage” behavior, they are free of the norms, stereotypes, and expectations that dominate “front stage” behavior. During this stage, individuals are often more comfortable and show their “true selves.”
This theory connects how our identity is related to the people we establish relationships with.
Symbolic Interaction Theory
The relationship between individuals within a society is the focus of Symbolic Interaction Theory. Individuals create sense of their social environments, according to this theory, through communication—the interchange of meaning via language and symbols
English Connection
Symbolism is a literary device that employs symbols to symbolize something besides plain interpretation, such as words, persons, marks, locations, or abstract notions
