Beauty: Twilight Zone Episode "Eye of the Beholder"
Definition of beauty
I want this essay to make people think more deeply about what the definition of beauty is
If there is anything I want to teach someone through this essay is that beauty is very psychological and it's perception is a result of many different aspects from health to personal experiences with people.
I want people to think critically about the concept of beauty.
although there are also things that are almost universally accepted as beautiful.
What is considered beautiful?
What does one's appearance make us think about a person's personality or ideology?
psychological
I think that I was to explore the aspect of alienation that was displayed in the episode. It was very sad and interesting to hear the protagonist, Janet talk about how she just wanted to be a part of society without people excluding her.
It was also interesting the way that Janet wanted to hide but also be free. Through most of the episode, she was in bandages because of the surgery, but also remarked that she had hidden from people her entire life.
I remember that at the time I wished I looked more like the people that surrounded me.
I want to explore it a little more and talk about how this episode exemplifies the idea that circumstances affect the way that beauty is perceived. This analysis of the episode will likely find out things that will make me feel more comfortable with talking about beauty and the way that it affects people.
It might also allow me to acknowledge certain parts of myself that I wouldn't usually.
feel more confidence in their body, understanding that in the end there are reasons why certain parts of themselves are or are seen as bad or good according to most people in their environment.
all things that have affected people at one point or another in life
Everyone at some point or another in their lives has felt insecurity about their bodies even if it's barely recognizable. It can affect people's self esteem, so I think it could be a way for the readers to feel more power and control when there isn't as much of a consideration of what is attractive to others, but what is attractive to one's self, if that makes sense.
I believe that the statement "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" is very true in what it is typically represented as meaning
The way society affects beauty norms
It made me think about how in some cultures such as Mauritania being overweight is considered a sign or prosperity and something to be emulated by young women, while in most European countries being very thin is considered beautiful.
I could relate to the protagonist of the episode in some ways because my body used to be different compared to the people I grew up around, since I'm biracial and therefore perceived as being different from the standard Italian girl.
I was intrigued by the plot and what it said about the correlated relationship between society
This changed when at 13, I was placed in a different environment where there was more diversity and I started to reconsider what I perceived as being attractive; this definition of beauty started to broaden.
Another aspect that I thought was interesting was the political structure of the government. There was a dictator like figure on the television during the episode who reminded me of fascist leaders,
because of the way they reacted when they saw her.
Through this episode I want to do research and find out what beauty's relationship to social norms and other factors we don't really notice is.
Changing Appearance
I think that I also want to explore the aspect of plastic surgery, although it was not a central focus of the episode. Maybe it displays the way that changing one's appearance might also change their character in some way. It's the most difficult aspect to comment on.
so I think that there was also commentary on the way politics can affect the need to change one's appearance, just like in the twilight episode "number 12 looks just like you"
Changing appearance can change someone's social standing in society
Can show commitment to a cause and can be painful
losing identity
making something natural into something unnatural or uncanny
Other
I selected the episode "the eye of the beholder" because based on the outlines of each episode I thought that it was the one that I could relate with the most.
just like in the twilight episode "number 12 looks just like you"; The two episodes seemed very similar to each other, exploring the same themes in different ways.
I'm not quite sure how my perspective would help people understand the theme but I would be content if my experience did have some impact on the audience of the article.
At the same time, I also don't want to seem like a teacher, but someone who is at the same level as the audience.
