How it affects the body
Arriving there after the walk made the uncomfortable stone welcomed. The stone was frigid and sharp, but even so it was a place to rest.
Scared to step barefoot on the ice I first let my body accommodate in the cold rock. Finally, after staring down at the ice for a while, I stepped on it. It was a shock; my first response was to lock my muscles and inhale air though my closed lips.

I probably didn’t let my feet touch the ice for more than 2 minutes and promptly placed them on the rock again.
The louder sound of a baby in a stroller took me out of the moment and that’s when I decided to head back. My body still tense from the cold.

Having something cold in contact with your skin is mostly disconformable and the response is similar with most people.
At the same time, the feeling of not belonging is something that readers can relate.
How do you feel like you don’t belong, but at the same time bring things from home that make you feel like you’re not disconnected.
Feeling alien
I precisely chose this lake because you can see the mountains from there. I love how imponent they felt, but at the same time alien.

-
Being in a different country, with very different geography and climate there is often an anxiety of not belonging.
-
I want to trigger the idea that the mountains are far away, and the cold is unwelcomed because they remind you of things your home isn’t.
-
However, I want to explore how the cold and the mountains can generate this feeling and I don’t expect this to be relatable.

An important point that must be made is that feeling alien is not the same as feeling alone. You can feel like this is not your land and at the same time feel welcomed in it. But this is not the point I want to explore, even though it’s a distinction that needs to be acknowledged.
I’m looking forward to the writing process. Creating a text that is at the same time relatable and foreign will be challenging, but fun.

Also, I want to explore this idea of belonging,
-
I want to explore the feeling of alienness and how it relates to mental health. How it reflects on the body and how something foreign, such as ice can trigger a response in relation to feeling alien.
Also, seeing if there is good research on this feeling of alienness in immigrants and how they deal with it.
Being from Colorado
The space I chose was a lake about a 2 mile walk from my house. I took the walk to be part of the experience.

Since CU students are in their vast majority from Colorado, the cold and the mountains are a part of what feels like home for them, in general.
