oxbow lake formation
formation
over time, continued erosion and deposition narrows the neck of the meander
-
there is less water on the inside bend so an increase in friction and a decrease in velocity (speed). as the river has less energy it depositits material
-
-
because the fastest current will be in the middle there will be deposition on either sides of the straighter path
-
this eventually seals off the meander leaving behind what is called a oxbow lake. the water in here will eventually dry up and it is not being supplied
