The Great Gatsby
“Gatsby bought that house so that Daisy would be just across the bay” (Fitzgerald, 78).
Explanation: The American dream means different things to different people. Gatsby's American dream was Daisy and even though he was very successful, he was never happy because he always wanted Daisy.
"By seven o’clock the orchestra has arrived—no thin five-piece affair but a whole pitful of oboes and trombones and saxophones and viols and cornets and piccolos and low and high drums" (Fitzgerald, 40).
Explanation: Gatsby is so wealthy. He always has the best of the best. He's so extravagant with his parties. I'm sure everybody was jealous of his wealth because he was the perfect example of what the majority envision when they hear "The American dream". Even though it was not his American dream.

Explanation: The rose didn't have the tools necessary to walk but it still learned to walk without them. This is very much like the American dream because not everyone starts with the same opportunities but they still have the chance to be something great and accomplish their dreams.

Explanation: If you keep your American dream and keep working at it you can eventually accomplish it.

Explanation: For many people The American dream means being filthy rich which is what these people are.
"“Do I drink this?” Rachel whispered to Nick" (Kwan, 2).
Explanation: Older generations always associated The American Dream with wealth and money. With old money comes old traditions which Rachel is unaware of. She asks if she is supposed to drink out of the bowl that she was meant to wash her hands in.

The American dream varies depending on the person. I believe the American dream is whatever makes someone happy. I personally want to be very successful. I want to be able to buy a bunch of expensive cars and live in a mansion.
