The lands that were conquered were colonies, which were parts of the colonial empires

The growth of population in Europe and the use of machiney made unemployment very high and people emigrated to the colonies for work
Thanks to geographic expeditions to unknown areas of the world and the dicovery of new plants, animals and minerals led to scientific progress
The colonies were very important to Europeans due to the international prestige that they gave them and the place in which they were located
People believed in white supremacy and in the duty that they had to bring European culture and Christian values to indigenous societies
The colonial empires
The largest colonial empires belonged to Great Britain and France which wanted to took control over the colonies of Africa and Asia
The European powers, Japan and United States colonised most of Africa, Asia and Oceania
