Assessments As, Of and For Learning download

Definition: A type of pre-assessment that allows teachers to evaluate the academic strengths, weaknesses, knowledge, and skills of their students before instruction on upcoming topics in a learning cycle.

Example: placement tests in English speaking, listening, reading, and writing prior to ELLs beginning a new school semester.

Definition: A measurement of how well students can apply their knowledge, skills, and abilities to authentic problems and complete open-ended tasks within specific criteria.

Example: role-plays or dramatic performances for ELLs to form groups, script their lines, rehearse their speeches, and deliver acting sequences that showcase their speaking abilities in English.

Formative assessments are a way to monitor a student's ongoing learning and provide feedback for both student and teacher.

Summative assessments are high stakes assessments set against a standard or benchmark.

Example: Weekly quizzes and homework

Example:Final essays, projects, GCSEs or A Levels.

Assessments For Learning:Assessment for learning involves teachers drawing upon students’ prior knowledge and skills to inform their teaching for the future.

Assessment Of Learning: measure student achievements against outcomes and standards. They provide transparent, easy to interpret results that are accessible to all audiences. Assessments of learning help students, teachers and parents gauge where a student is and informs aforementioned parties of where the student can get to next.

Example: End of term multiple choice and short answer test.

Assessment As Learning: allows students to take ownership of their learning by monitoring themselves. Students employ a variety of strategies, such as asking questions setting personal goals, to determine a learning outcome for themselves.

Example: Peer assessment of another student's work

Example: Holding a PTS meeting where all parties can actively reflect on progress to date and immediate educational goals.
