In the information age competition comes from different sources than traditional competitors and the rate of change has become more rapid. (Barriers to entry have changed)
Firms need to develop new dynamic capabilities to stay competitive that harnesses the influencing factors.
Dynamic capabilities is a starting position (Teece) involving a shift to a more entrepreneurial management approach and focussing on sensing the external environment,
it has its argument and detractors (Helfat, etc) and it is an evolving area, limited empirical evidence (Zott) but with recent papers Reeves, McGrath and Teece own recent work ... its moving in the direction towards sensing - even the language has moved away from traditional terms like Forces (Porter).
