Bearings
Latitude
Definition- the angular distance of a place north or south of the earth's equator, or of the equator of a celestial object, usually expressed in degrees and minutes.
Example- Cairo, Egypt, in degrees and minutes would be written as 29° 52' N
Longitude
Definition- the angular distance of a place east or west of the Greenwich meridian, or west of the standard meridian of a celestial object, usually expressed in degrees and minutes
Example- longitude of Paris, France, is 2° 29' E

Environmental Change
Land, water and atmosphere degradation
Land degradation
Defintion- the temporary or permanent decline in the productive capacity of the land, and the diminution of the productive potential, including its major land uses
Example-Land clearance, such as clearcutting and deforestation
Water Degradation
Definition- changes in the physical, chemical and biological properties of water, or such discharges of liquid, gaseous or solid substances into water as will or are likely to create nuisances or render such water harmful to public health, safety or welfare

Atmosphere degradation
Definition- Atmospheric degradation means the alteration by humans, directly or indirectly, of atmospheric conditions having significant deleterious effects of such a nature as to endanger human life and health and the Earth's natural environment.

Climate change
Definition- a change in global or regional climate patterns, in particular a change apparent from the mid to late 20th century onwards and attributed largely to the increased levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide produced by the use of fossil fuels.

Definition: An area reference allows people to find a general location in a grid square. Area references comprise four-figure numbers. The first two figures are always an easting and the second two figures are always a northing
