MANUFACTURING
Tools?
Materials?
Plastic, wood, metals
Thermosetting plastics will be a better choice over a thermoforming plastic because if lots of heat is applied to it, the form of the plastic may change (this is because thermoforming plastics do not have crosslinks in their structure).
Aluminum is ductile and easy to machine. It's a reliable and easy to use option and it's lightweight but has an excellent strength-to-weight ratio. Aluminum is non-ferrous so it cannot rust when exposed to moisture.

Hardwoods such as oak and mahogany are expensive but have a very attractive grain when finished. They are mainly used for high end furniture. Other softwoods such as pine are easy to work and are not as expensive because they grow quickly.
Components?
Wires, bulb, light bulb socket, etc
Centre lathe, pop rivet gun? Strip heater? Vacuum former? Bandsaw?
Types of bulbs
Halogen incandescent, compact fluorescent lamps (CFL), light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Out of these bulbs, LEDs are usually the most energy efficient so they will last you the longest. They are also cool to touch so you won't get injured if you accidentally touch the bulb.
Types of lighting?
Ambient lighting - Ambient lighting is mostly used to provide a sufficient amount of light in a room. The main sources of ambient lighting are ceiling lights, spotlights, etc.
Accent lighting - Typically used by focusing light on a specific area to draw attention to it. Can be used to highlight art or artifacts in a museum.
Task lighting - Task lighting provides an increase of light in a room that is dark. Most lamps are commonly used to provide task lighting for hobbies such as reading.
AESTHETICS
Design trends
Modern
Simplistic design, appeals to a certain percentage of the target demographic (more catered towards adults than teenagers?)
Minimalism
A minimalistic design usually only prioritises the essential function of a product whilst avoiding any unnecessary things.
Contemporary
A contemporary design focuses on using simplicity, clear lines and a little bit of urbanity.
CLIENT
Gender
Male
Depending on age, some males prefer to have themed style lamps while others may prefer a more simplistic or sophisticated looking one.
Age
14
At this age, usually most teens won't like to have a themed lamp (e.g superhero themed) and would most likely prefer one that fits with the style of their room or one which is aesthetically pleasing to look at.

Fluorescent bulbs contain mercury which is a toxic metal. In CFL bulbs, mercury is still present however there is a lot less of it.
Incandescent bulbs are very inefficient because of their wasteful energy consumption. A normal Incandescent bulb uses 75% more energy than your typical CFL bulb.
