Harpers Lee's mom was not very present. She didnt leave the house a lot because she had a mental illness.
Education
Harper Lee went to 3 different colleges:
-Huntingdon college
-University of Alabama
-University of Oxford
At first Harper Lee went to school for law to be like her father but then realised she didnt want to go into law so she dropped out and began to pursue writing.
At the university of Alabama Harper
Lee was apart of the school newspaper . The newspaper was called the 'Rammer Jammer". Harper Lee became the publication editor for the newspaper.
Writing
Once Harper Lee was being supported she began writing manuscript about a small town in Alabama. That manuscript eventually became To Kill a Mockingbird.
Michael brown and his wife also helped Harper Lee get an editor that helped her get publishers to look at her work.
Harper Lee helped her friend Truman Capote write for an article about a murder for The New Yorker. Eventually Capote began to write a novel about the case In Cold Blood which Lee helped with. Once In Cold Blood was published Capote didnt give attributions to Harper Lee but deciated the book to her.
Harper Lee published To Kill a Mockingbird in 1960. To kill a Mockingbird won the Pulitzer prize along with many other awards for the book. To kill a Mockingbird became a classic and is translated in more than 40 languages with millions of copies sold every year.
To Kill a Mockingbird is a book about a young girl named Scout who was like Harper Lee when she was younger. The book is a coming of age novel that also includes racial prejudices, when her father atticus fights a trial.
Harper Lee's manuscript called Go Set a Watchman was also published in 2015. It used the character scout as older than she was in To Kill a Mockingbird to come back to Maycomb where she deals with a racist dad, Atticus.
Go Set a Watchman was going to be what was published but it was rejected. Harpers Lee editor told her she needed to rewrite the story with scout as a kid. Harper Lee spent two years rewriting the story which eventually was published into To kill a Mockingbird.
Work
After dropping out of college in 1949 Harper Lee worked as a ticket agent in New York City. She worked as a ticket agent until she met Micheal Martin brown. Michael and his wife told Harper Lee that they would support her for a year so she could pursue her writing full time.
