Informal Supervisor Meeting Notes - 2022-02-01
No meeting the previous day as Kate unwell and I was finishing chapter
Met with derek and he showed me instruments and how to cup samples
Email Dan to see if he can show me how he does thin-sections
Met with Kate and had a very long, detailed chat
Notes here are mostly from meeting with Kate
No meeting on Monday as Kate busy and I am in London
Meeting week after though
Thesis structure
Current structure not fit for purpose as CBM synthesis is very important but far too early in thesis if before methods
Methods should form a 'belt', i.e. Intro and first chapters start broad to give background to reader but draw to a narrower focus into methods and then expands outwards as results and discussion and conclusion are presented
Need to have a long hard look at structure and rejig it until a coherent narrative and way for reader to progress emerges
One way might be Intro -> Aims -> Antiquarian -> CBM method review/section -> CBM Roman Britain -> CBM Roman Bath -> Results -> Discussion -> Conclusion
Major rejig after rereading sections could be intro -> revamped antiquarian -> CBM from Roman Bath -> CBM from Roman Britain -> methods -> Results -> Discussion -> Conclusion
This does not start wide and narrow, it goes intro -> history of research in Bath -> what we know about CBM in Bath -> what we know about CBM in Britain -> What methods have been applied to CBM in Britain -> What methods I am applying -> Results -> discussion -> conclusion
Removal of stone is not a given as comprised a key reason for funding project in the first place!
Methods draft feedback
Kate has read through and left wide range of comments
Objections are not to content but to structure and repetition of techniques already reviewed in other sections
This suggests that large areas can be shortened to save on words
One area that Kate did wish I had discussed more was the results of the trial (or pilot) analysis and what this suggested
Perhaps add a section going through this?
Results presented in request for permission to create fresh breaks, so can simply recap that
Whole chapter needs to be shorter
Writing it out in full was valuable as a lot of parts can go straight into appendices, and be replaced with just a few lines on what I did (hopefully)
Move thin-sections in front of pXRF, following change in scales of analysis rather than linear progression of research
Also, if possible, say that small number of thin-sections created was a result of lack of diagnsotic mineral inclusions found in the actual thin-section, rather than the other way round
Exclusion of stone sampling
Kate and Derek are largely happy with this idea in terms of saving time and removing words
Derek suggested a way where most of the method is shoved into appendices with only a little ref in results and discussion, but leaves me open to questions during viva
Problems with removal may come from objections from Mark and Stephen, as both have been heavily invested in stone analysis
If excluded, must be able to complete before viva because not getting it wrapped up and done could seriously impact my career down the line given Stephen's connections and importance of the site
Main reason I am not happy at present is because of missing readings, but given circumstances these could be bodged with use of pXRF data from pXRF 1
Contact Maurice ASAP to see if he has any stone from these sites that I could sample
Or could collect additional samples after viva but have analyses in thesis as a placeholder essentially
Results
Kate emphasised that these can really be bare bones, with tables doing most (nearly all!) of the talking
Anything that needs to be really explained should probably go in the discussion chapter instead
Better to quickly assemble a skeleton methods and get it straight out if possible and have more time for discussion
Perhaps mirror structure of method that Kate suggested, i.e. recording -> fabrics/thin-sections -> compositional
Better as matches changes in scales of analysis, which feels natural and logical
Proofreading and finishing
Important to have someone else to proofread final texts to catch mistakes I missed
Could parents do this? Marina? Pay someone?
Kate said I am in a good position where I am now, but finishing will be a grind
Important to get results wrapped up ASAP so that discussion can be developed with enough time
