Multiplexing Method
TYPES OF MULTIPLEXING SCHEME
Wavelength-division Multiplexing (WDM)
A fiber-optic transmission technique that enables the use of multiple light wavelengths (or colors) to send data over the same medium
Each sensor allocated at a certain wavelength range
Each sensor has its own detector
Coherence Multiplexing (CM)
Each sensor associated with a certain delay loop
Each sensor has its own matching detector loop
Spatial Multiplexing (SM)
A multiplexing technique in MIMO wireless communication, fibre-optic communication and other communications technologies used to transmit independent channels separated in space.
Simplest multiplexing method to utilised
Each sensor has its own separate fiber line
Frequency-division Multiplexing (FDM)
A technique of multiplexing which means combining more than one signal over a shared medium
Code-division Multiplexing (CDM)
A networking technique in which multiple data signals are combined for simultaneous transmission over a common frequency band
Time-division Multiplexing (TDM)
a method of putting multiple data streams in a single signal by separating the signal into many segments, each having a very short duration
Each sensor is allocated in certain time interval
Each sensor has its own delay line
THE NEEDS OF MULTIPLEXING
To identify signal from different sensors
A unique feature of FO sensing
More than one sensors
Capability of multiplexing and distributed sensing
CM
Strength : unique method for interferometric sensors
Weakness : problem in matching detecting and sensing arms
Special Features : requires sensing loops
WDM
Strength : good power per unit ratio
Weakness : may require specially designed components
Special Features : requires a broadband source or many sources
TDM
Strength : use standard proven electronics
Weakness : requires fast electronics
Special Features : requires delay line
SM
Strength : simple implementation
Weakness : may requires many detector and abundant fibre
Special Features : requires separate fibre lines
WHAT IS MULTIPLEXING ?
A technique used to combine and send the multiple data streams over a single medium
