Chronic Osteomyelitis
Likely to occur when large segments of bone become avascular an necrotic (common in foot infections in pts w/ DM if wounds are not removed w/ surgery)
Bone changes characteristics may appear late and not typically seen until at least 10-14 days after onset of infection

Monitoring
ESR, C-reactive protein, and WBC count may appear abnormal (do not determine the outcome, but can be useful for monitoring

Diagnosis
Needle aspiration
S. aureus, is responsible for more than 80% of these infections then Streptococci and Escherichia coli (E. coli).
