- HIV infects a person by many different things, including sexual activity, blood transfusions, breast feeding, a fetus can get infected if their mother has it, needle sharing etc.
- HIV leads to aids when HIV destroys the (CD4) t-cells, the t-cells are white blood cells, and when your body has a low amount of white blood cells the immune system becomes weak because the white blood cells are the ones that help the body fight off diseases. When the (CD4) t-cells count becomes lower than 200 and/or you are found to have a AIDS-defining complication.
stages of HIV
- ACUTE HIV INFECTIONS - takes place in about weeks to months after getting infected, some HIV infected people present flu-like symptoms. In this stage the HIV virus starts to multiply at a rapid rate and starts to spread through the entire body.
- CHRONIC HIV INFECTION - the second stage of HIV is when the virus still multiplies in the body but at slower rates, in this stage HIV infected people might not present any symptoms. If taking the right medication people with HIV are less prone to pass the HIV to other people, also with the right medication people with HIV might stay in this stage for many years and delay the final stage of HIV.
- AIDS - the third and final stage of HIV. AIDS is considered the most dangerous stage of HIV. The immune system is badly damaged because of HIV and the body is not able to fight off “opportunistic infections”. When someone reaches the AIDS stage they can pass HIV to other people very quickly and if they don’t get treatment averagely they survive to up to three years
