Religious pluralism and society.
The Other and dialogue.
The word other can mean a number of diffrent things in ternms of dialogue but is can be most comminly used in a negative way
However we need to distigwith the diffreance between the 'Other' and 'othering'.
Other
Although this cna be used in a negaive way it is important to point out that this can be used in a posative or constructive way in that it can mean that there is an acknowledgment that there are diffrent interttaion of the world.
If it was not for the idea of the other christanty would not have devloped such as distinctiuve rgae of belifes.
Othering
Othering is the prosses in which a groups of powple are dehuminzed and considered 'other'. This has been used by many groups to commite acts of Racism, Sexim and other froms fo hate.
Inter-faith Dialogue trys to solve these issues reagrding hate by develpinng and understanding btween two religiouns while also understanding others may have a diffrent interaption of the world .
Inter-faith Dialogue
Theological-inclusivism
David Ford
says we need to try and find a common groud between religouns
such as Abraham who is ubserved in Islam, Christianty and Jewdaism.
This is to help start a convisation on the subject.
there are exarples of were diffrent religiouns have looked at how diffrent religiouns have made attemtps to try and hve inter-faith dialogue.
'Speek the the Truth' Published 2000 was a jewish statement on christianty.
try to develp and open and genuine discution about religioun
This dose not mean that religiouns can be critical of each others point of view as if this did not happon then the intregrity og ones religioun may be reduced.
address the charge of Christsan imperalism
What are the issues?
reduces the creativeness of Dialogue
Dose not realy alow for dissargreament
Theological Exclusivism
They would see it as a way to introduce non-chistans to the Gospel With the hope of converstion.
The Catholic Church
The idea of treating diffrent reigiouns with care and repesct when having inter faith dialogue is key particurly if they want to devleop the churches 'pastoral care'.
'All religiouns have a ray of truth in them' Vatican II
Pastoral care
means poviding emotional and spitral welfair.
The protistant point of view
Karl Bath
Calls for chritians to enter dissustion with others with deep humility and openess
Not for humans to dictate how God reveals himself only God himself can.
However it his theology is unclear partiuclery when it come to the supject of Christan imperlism
Theological pluralism
UTP Universal theological pluralists
are intresed in the idea of develping a global faith.
It is the idea that those from other religiouns can try to learn and undertand other religiouns in oder to get a deeper undertsanding of there own.
Keith ward
Dose not mean to always look for common ground disagreements can be good in resesting the globalised idea that all religiouns are fundimentily the same and that they all worship the same God.
Hick
They think that different Religiouns are the same asspects of the same underling reality and therefore Inter-religious dilague has a very real propect fo creating world peace.
This would lead to the creation of a 'global theology'
ETP Ethical theolgical pluralists
Think the goal of the UTP is too abstarct
argues that it Inter-Fiath dialogue should be a way to try and live less sefishly and to creat a fairer and more just world with the wisdom of the maior world religiouns.
should be more pratical then theoretical
Pual Kintter
Issues
For any of this to work Religiouns need to exept the pluralists model of thinking.
Some would suggest that this line of thought underminds sertan belifs and distictiveness of Differant religiouns. and saying that non-of them can say anything that can be considered true.
may be too focused on religiouns and istitutions and there leaders and ending up marginalsing ordinary belivers
Too superfficial
Is a way for Religiouns to interact with each other to grow a greater understanding of each other.
however it can also be a way for diffrent religiouns to build mutual support aginst agressive seculrism in mordern socity
Mission and conversion
Misssion and inter-faith dialogue in the church of England
The role of the church of England in terms of mission have been laid out in the document sharing the Gospel of Salvation (2010)
the Church should be bolder in the Expresson of faith in British socity
Missonary work in a modern multi-faith Britain needs to be done in more sensative way then in the past.
they mjst show hospitalisty to Imagrents of Non-christian faith, and to develp good inter religious relations with them in hopes that they will convert.
The most effective form of missionary is when Christian live althenticly christan lives insted of just proping up other social institutions
Mission work can only work properly when motiveated by a shared sence of 'common good' for socity as a whole.
The church has many oppotunitrys to perfrom missioary work such as in schools, councils, Churches and other networks.
The Gospel of Slavation endorses the fourfold classification of dialogue
The dialgogue of daily life
Encounters that happon on the door step or at the railway station
The dialgogue of mutual understanding.
often in more formalised structures or conversations such as scripural reasoning.
The dialgogue of common good
Encounters together in tasks beneficial to the community.
The dialgogue of of spiritual life
encountering each other at praer and worship.
Mission and inter-faith dialogue in the roman catholic church
Should christans have a misson to those of no faith
The awser to most would seem to be Yes.
How is it diffrent from those who have a non-christan faith?
However there are distictions that have to be made.
Some who are very Atheistic may have very good reasons for being so and for beliveing why religious faith is unacceptable.
For some any attempt to persuade them could be counter-productive
However this dose not mean people of no faith can't interact with inter-faith dialogue as it is incressingly being aimed at those of all 'faiths and none'. In addtion to the rise of aloterantive faiths like Wicca and feng.
Form the RAE perspective those who have firmly regected the Gospel are not part of the Elect for Gods grace.
The Mission of the Catholic Church is set out in Redemproris Missio (1990)
'Inter-religious dialogue is part of the churchs evanglsizing mission.'
dialogue is possable ina respectful mannor and must pefromed in such way in addtion to not treat it as a tactical and selfish method as all lawful Religiouns are lead by the Holy spirt.
In oder for there to be this dialogue both sides must be honist and respectful
though dialogue the Church seeks rays fo truth. This being found in inderviduals and religious tradtions
Event if some are mistrustful of missionrys the church pushes them to be persistent
The idea of trying to encorage others to belive in what you belive in to be true becuase you you'r self belive it to be true.
one of the issuses with mission and conversion is the lack of agreement on what slavation means between religiouns and people
