II. Theodicy versus Hell
- Hell is not compatible with an omnibenevolent God
- God's purpose is to "desire and actively work for the salvation of each created person."
- Universal Salvation is somewhat possible (James's analogy of the chess tournament)
Criticisms of Hick's views on Hell:
- Does universal salvation make Jesus's sacrifice redundant?
- How does Hick know God's purpose if he believes in epistemic distance?
- Arguably still violates free will
God is a therapist. He's not trying to get people to do things against their nature, but to release them from denial and inhibitions so they can fulfil their nature and come to God.
