Fashion Cycle
Definition: Fashion acceptance where the period of time or life span during which fashion exists.
Depicted with 5 stages
The length of time that a particular fashion remains in any of the stages of the life cycle depends on the consumer's willingness to accept the fashion
Introduction stage
New styles are introduced but only produce in limited production therefore the price is high enough so that those succeed can cover the losses on those that don't succeed
Fashion leaders act to promote the new product or style for people to get to know about it that previewed at major design centers.
Rise Stage
The design is accepted by an increasing number of customers
fashion buyers reorder in quantity for maximum store coverage
Manufacturers adopt designs and styles to produce with less expensive fabric or less detail
more affordable & availability
acceptance by more people
adaptions & changes
mass production
retailers will offer lime for line copies or knockoffs
copying of an item at a lower price
Peak Stage
fashion most popular & acceptance as variety of fashion versions and price levels
the length at this stage determines if fashion becomes a classic & it is called as CULMINATION STAGE (plateau stage)
a fashion is at height of its popularity. At this stage the fashion can be mass-produced, mass-distributed & sold at reasonable prices
the culmination stage can be extended if fashion becomes accepted as a classic or if new details of design, color / texture are continually introduced like running shoes
Decline Stage
the decrease in consumer demand because of boredom resulting form widespread use of fashion where the production become slows and markdowns are happened. For example, sale for clearance stocks.
decline are fast, and a drop to obsolescence is almost always steeper than a rise to culmination
Obsolescence Stage
consumers no longer interested
manufacturers not producing
low price
when strong distaste for a style has set in and it can no longer be sold at any price
Recognizing the different stages of a fashion cycle is important to both store buyers and consumers
Fashion Cycle Length
Classic
simple design that remain acceptance by long time
example: polka dot
Fads
produced & sold at lower prices because easy to copy and moves quickly through fashion cycle. fashion popular at short period of time
example: pants placement on the hips
Cycles within cycles
The styles that remain more or less accepted for an extended period. These styles never become completely obsolete.
Example: Classic shirt, Jeans
Recurring cycles
Over the years there have been many popular styles and trends for different eras. Some may go out of style, while other trends come back in style. There is really no time period on fashion.
Example: Saloma's fashion, boot cut

start from high-class accepted by lower group
example: by famous people
trickle-up theory
idea from lower class to make it luxury

distribute among several group & only certain people that have interest on that kind of fashion

Consumer Groups
1) Fashion Leader
people who are influential in fashion that are confident and have stylist to advice them. Generally people who are interested in fashion for themselves and do not merely wore clothes to set trends for others.
example: Artist, Singer
Categories
(i) fashion innovator
group of people / individual that introduce new trends to society
create fashion statement, aggressively looking for interesting new styles, colors, fabric and accessories
could be: designers / models/ celebrities / even us
(ii) fashion motivator
those who have beauty to carry every look graciously / have wealth to become role fashion models
most of these people are in media including royalty, politicians, tv & films stars also super model
(iii) fashion victim
is used to identify a person who is unable to identify commonly recognized boundaries of style
too much changing of styles from season to season
2) Fashion follower
these people imitate others only after they are sure of fashion trends
they lack of time, money & interest to devote to fashion leadership
more acceptance to what they are wearing thus they encourage bogger network of fashion followers in their family
