Romantic/Idealised Love Revision
Sonnet 116
Shakespeare
Structure
Sonnet form, follows a typical Petrarchan sonnet. Octet followed by a sestet. The sonnet doesn't follow the Petrarchan notion of courtly love, which was always present in these types of sonnets, as Shakespeare uses the sonnet to talk about true love.
Monosyllabic words to show the simplicity of love and two people becoming one.
Iambic Pentameter to mimic a heartbeat of romantic love but also to show that love is always constant.
Personification of time as death to show the transcendence of love through time and death.
Quotes
'Within his bending sickles'
Personification of time as death to show that love can even beat death and transcend time.
Time takes away youth, looks, health but can't take away true love.
'It is the star to every wandring barke'
Love is a star to every lost ship, guiding it home.
Imagery of the north star to show what light and safety real love gives.
The north star is the brightest star and can always be seen the way true love can always be seen compared to a marriage for economic jointure.
The north star provides light, leads love home and gives guidance, safety and care.
'It is an ever fixed marke'
Love is an ever fixed lighthouse and offers light, hope and safety.
This can link to Gatsby's green light.
'Even to the edge of doom'
Love transcends doom and that true love can even last till doomsday (the end of the world).
'The marriage of true mindes'
Marry only for true love.
'If this be error and upon me proved,
I never writ, nor no man ever loved.'
If this is wrong and proved wrong then I'm not a writer and no man has ever been in love. That you can't prove that marriage for jointure is as beautiful as the beauty of romantic/true love.
