Civilizations first appeared in Mesopotamia (what is now Iraq) and later in Egypt. Most historians believe that one of the first civilizations arose in Sumer.
Civilizations developed on every continent except Antarctica.

An institution was a group of people who shared a
specific purpose.

Were institutions that existed to educate a population.
Religion
Became a formal institution in which temples were built and priests took charge of religious duties.
Army
Was an institution that helped people meet their security needs.
Advance Technology
The wheel, the plow, and the sailboat.
Record Keeping
Cuneiform tablets, records of business transactions, historical events, customs, and traditions.
Specialized Workers
During civilitations different people had to perform specialized tasks.

Government Officials
