Types of assessment
DIAGNOSTIC ASSESSMENT
Diagnostic assessments are sets of written questions (multiple choice or short answer) that assess a learner's current knowledge base or current views on a topic/issue to be studied in the course.
Different types of assessments help teachers understand student progress in various ways and adapt teaching strategies accordingly.

Types of evaluation:
• Pre-tests (on content and abilities)
• Self-assessments (identifying skills and competencies)
• Discussion board responses (on content-specific prompts)
• Interviews (brief, private, 10-minute interview of each student)

Types of activities:
• Journal (personal record containing reading, writing and listening responses).
• “What stuck with you today?” (Ss write on a post-it what they have learned that day).
• “Spelling inventory” (Ss write dictated words before a lesson to see a true assessment of what the Ss know beforehand).
• “KWL” (Ss write a chart of what they know and what they want to know finally, what they learned).
• “Traffic light” (A green dot shows they felt they completed and understood the work without any problems, a yellow dot shows they felt they had a few problems or questions about the work, and a red dot shows the students felt they had a lot of difficulty completing or understanding the work).
FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT
Formative assessment refers to a variety of methods used to conduct in-process evaluations of student comprehension, learning needs, and academic progress during a lesson. Assessment for learning happens while learning is still underway. Formative assessment is part of the instructional process.

• Classwork/Homework
• Journal reflection

• Sketch note concept map (Ss draw a concept map on what they are learning)
• Highlighter (Ss highlight the most important parts of a text during the reading task)
• Write pair share (Ss work and comment in pairs on a task)
• Write down your own quiz question (Ss write their own quiz questions)
• Wrong answer (Ss decide if an answer given by the T is right or wrong)
SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT
Summative assessment evaluates what a student has learned at the end of an instructional unit by comparing it against some standard, benchmark or previous grade. Summative assessments often have a high point value. Summative assessments are of learning.
