Site surveys
Trial pits
-The main advantage of this method over a light cable percussion drill or window test is the relative speed at which the work can be performed.
-The sampling strategy can also be modified whilst the investigation is still in progress for a little cost.
The disadvantage is the degree of surface disturbance and the difficulty of achieving effective rehabilitation of the excavations.
furthermore, Proving pits are often made when the ground is temporarily able to stand without the need of support. When there is water in the dug hole, problems can arise due to the instability of the side walls. It can also be difficult to obtain representative soil samples because water washes away fine materials during sampling.
plate bearing tests
A plate bearing test results give a better understanding of the foundation behavior under loading conditions.
Evaluation of bearing capacity of soil at a certain depth and prediction of settlement for a certain load can be made as a result from a plate bearing test.
Shallow foundation can be calculated considering the allowable bearing capacity, which can be predicted from the plate load test.

A plate bearing test has a limited depth of influence. It could only give the bearing capacity of soils with depth up to two times the diameter of the plate.
It may not even provide information on the potential for long-term consolidation of foundation soils.

Subsoil classification
subsoil classification gives Knowledge of the type of soil being dealt with onsite is critical since it allows for a greater grasp of the ground, as well as assessments of its bearing capacity and, ultimately, giving an accurate understanding of its constraints.
The disadvantage to this type of site survey is that it has to be carried out physically on-site therefor permission is required and it can also take a lot of time to complete the process.in simple terms it can be time consuming.
The walk over
Walk-in surveys of the site and surrounding areas can identify obvious visible or prominent surface issues such as contaminated surface water and potential sources of pollution nearby. A desk survey can draw conclusions about pollution and the risk of pollution.
This type of survey requires physical access to the site and it can take time to complete the whole walkover survey. Also, this survey requires full focus when walking over a sight if this does not happen then it can cause delays and issues for the construction project as there is issues with the sight which was not identified in the walk-over.
