Multiplexing Method - Coggle Diagram

- - - - A method of putting multiple data streams in a single signal by separating the signal into many segments, each having a very short duration.
    - - Tend to waste time slots because a time slot is allocated for each device regardless of whether that device has anything to send.
    - - Flexibility. The scheme allows for variation in the number of signals being sent along the line and constantly adjusts the time intervals to make optimum use of the available bandwidth.

        The Internet in which the volume of traffic can change drastically from hour to hour.
  - - - b) Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM)
        
        Can handle higher speed protocols, even 400 Gbps per channel.
        
        Works on the same principle as CWDM, but can also be amplified to support much longer distances.
        
        Mostly used in the core networks to extend over very long distances and where more wavelengths are required between sites.
      - a) Coarse Wave Division Multiplexing (CWDM)
        
        Standardized to have 18 different wavelength channels with a spacing of 20 nm starting at 1270 nm and ending at 1610 nm.
        
        Advantages
        
        Always possible to upgrade at a later point in time to limit the installation cost on day one.
        
        Wider channel spacing places less stringent requirements on the lasers which allows use of less expensive lasers without temperature controllers.
