Refraction
Definition: Bending of light from its path when it enters a new medium. Except when light is moving perpendicular to the new medium or is in line with the normal.
Properties: Caused by change in speed of light because of change in medium
TIR: happens when the light is travelling from a denser to a rarer medium with an angle of incidence > critical angle. Light gets deviated away from normal in such a way (at 90 degrees) that instead of going to the rarer medium it reflects back to the dense medium.
-
When light decelerates it bends towards normal; when it accelerates it bends away from normal
Whether or not it slows down or speeds up depends on the medium's refractive index
More the density, slower light travels in the medium and vice versa. (i.e. faster in rarer medium)
Dispersion
-
white light spectrum consists of VIBGYOR (violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange and red)
red light refracts the least, whereas violet light refracts the most
