relationships
Another relationship in 9 to 5 is Judy and her ex husband Dick. Dick leaves Judy for a younger woman called Mindi. Obviously, Judy if upset by this matter. However, she moves on. When Dick comes to get her back she refuses and says that he "used [her] abused [her], you cheated and you lied", this is said during the song "Get Out and Stay Out" which is based on Judy taking back her life and becoming independent. At the end of the musical it is revealed that Judy writes a best selling book entitled "Life without Dick".
There are several relationships in 9 to 5. One relationship is the sexual behaviour towards DoraLee from Mr Hart. DoraLee is a married woman and tells Mr Hart this occasionally. Mr Hart also is married but says that this doesn't matter, his opinion is expressed in the song "I Want". Mr Hart wants to sleep with DoraLee but she won't let this happen. Her colleagues however believe that she is sleeping with the boss so they already have a preconceived view of her. This explains why when Judy joins the workplace Violet says "we don't like her" referring to DoraLee. DoraLee is aware of these views and expresses her opinion in "Backwards Barbie".
Violet had a strong relationship with her son, they were extremely close. This is shown during the scene where Violet's son offers her a joint, she immediately refuses. But, after her son asks her "how long have you been waiting for a promotion" she takes the joint. This highlights how her son knows her well and is aware of her work. The joint is shared with DoraLee and Judy when they begin to fantasize about their revenge.
The main relationship in 9 to 5 is Judy, DoraLee and Violet's friendship. This friendship transforms from work colleagues who tolerate each other to really close friends who helped to transform each of their lives as well as their colleagues. The trios friendship blossomed when they decided to kidnap Mr Hart in order to change the workplace. This kidnapping allowed them to communicate a plan to transform the office. Another way their friendship improved was when they decided to have a joint together. This helped them see each of their true selves and the similarity that they all have: the dislike of their boss, Mr Hart.
revenge/ karma
In 9 to 5, the revenge is shown towards Mr Hart. Mr Hart is a misogynistic and egotistical man who is sexist towards the women.
obviously, the women aren't happy about this but want to maintain their job so choose not to say anything. This changes once Judy, DoraLee and Violet kidnap Mr Hart and give him a taste of his own medicine.
Judy gets her revenge on her ex husband Dick during "Get out and Stay Out". Her ex husband left her heartbroken for Mindi. Judy is jealous of her. This is shown in the line "Mindi with an i" showing how she finds her cool and trendy.
The song "Get Out and Stay Out" is based on Judy refusing to get back with Dick. In particular in the lines: "I used to need you, but then I finally learned, I used to want you, but now the tables turned". This implies that Judy has learnt from her past mistakes with Dick and has developed by not needing him anymore.
equality
In 9 to 5 there is uneven pay rises shown in the workers, the women got a different amount to the men when doing the same job. If the women talked about this they would most likely be fired.
This all is changed once Violet becomes CEO because she allows an equal pay. This is one of the changes expressed in "change it".
For example, Maria mentions how she has got $12,000 whereas a man who was doing the same job got $2,000 more: $14,000. Maria finds this unfair as any woman would. As Maria spoke up about this issue she got fired by Mr Hart. It was said that "she didn't have the rights to talk about this matter"

female empowerment
female empowerment is shown through the changes made during "change it". These changes improve the office dramatically and show the impact the three women can have. For example, Violet introduces child care for the workers. This allows the parents to not worry about their children and work more efficiently. Another change that was added is longer lunch breaks. This allows the workers to relax and reco-operate meaning that when they return to work they will be more productive.
love
an example of love shown in 9 to 5 is how Violet decides that she will give Joe a chance and will no longer push him away - she will be open to the new relationship. Violet has been a single mother since her husband died. She says that she is "a one man woman" implying that she believes that she shouldn't have another man since she has been married once before.
There is also a one sided love in 9 to 5, this is Roz's love for Mr Hart. Roz adores Mr Hart and will do anything for him this is shown as she is willing to spy on the other women in order to report to Mr Hart: "if you want to gossip in the ladies room, you must check under the stalls for feet first". Mr Hart takes advantage of her love.
The song "Heart to Hart" is Roz confessing her love for Mr Hart. She ends the song with the phrase "i love you" confirming the idea that she loves Mr Hart. This explains why she will do anything for him.
female success
each of the women develop and become more successful during 9 to 5. Their progression is shown at the end of the musical in particular.
Violet becomes CEO of the company meaning that Mr Hart leaves the company to go to the Amazon Rainforest (later to be taken by some tribes). This is significant to Violets development as she believed that she wouldn't be able to become CEO as she was a woman. Therefore, Mr Hart wouldn't allow her to get any promotions.
As well as Violet becoming CEO she becomes more adventurous with her relationships, She gives Joe a chance and is extremely happy with him despite the age gap. They continue to be together for 30 years
Judy transforms from a lenient and easily influenced woman to an independent women. At the end of the musical it is revealed that Judy has wrote a book titled: "life without Dick". This is amusing as not only has she realised that she no longer needs males in her life; she has realised that she doesn't need her ex husband: Dick. The book is implied that it expresses her attitude towards being a single woman and how she refused Dick when he came running back to her. This is because Mindi broke up with him.
The bestselling book "life without Dick" allowed Judy to be a regular guest on the talk show: The View.
DoraLee endeavours her passion to be a singer and moves to Nashville to achieve this. She is an extremely successful country singer.
