Sexism
In the 1979 work salary's were different for women and men even if they were doing the same job. For example in 9 to 5 Marriea wasn't being payed as much as her male co-worker was being payed 14,000 but she was only being payed 12,000 which is unfair because they were doing the same job. Marriea complained about it with her office friends but Ross (Mr Harts spy) found out what she was saying and marriea was fired for discussing it.
Mr Hart is a boss who is inappropriate to the female workers. He looks at Doralee in sexual manner. Doralee is unware of the way Mr Hart looks at her, thinks about her and how he thinks as her being "My Girl". The women at the office dislike Doralee at the start because they think that she is having an affair with Mr Hart. When Doralee finds out about this she says "Ill change you from a rooster to a hen in one shot" which shows how angry she is.
In the 'Dance of death' song Judy highlights how Hart calls her 'Jodie' or 'You' which shows how he is only interested in 'girls' who he is attracted to. At the end of the song Judy says 'By the way the name is Judy!' which shows how Judy wont let Mr Hart treat her like she's nobody.
Love/ Relationship
Ross is in love with Mr Hart because he calls her 'My girl' and Ross is his little spy. She would do anything for him which is shown in the line 'Are you kidding she'd off mother Treasa if Hart asked her too' . Which shows how madly in love Ross is with Hart. on the other hand Hart feels oppositely he has no desire to love Ross.
Violet and Joe
There relationship between Joe and Violet is complicated because the age gap between her and Joe is big. Joe is ten years younger than violet. Violet says 'I could be your mum.... Sister!' and 'How late do your parents let you stay up?' which shows the massive age difference between them and the reason why Violet feels uncomfortable.
Judy and Dick
Judy's purpose when she was younger and in a relationship with Dick was to do everything for him. in the song 'Get out stay out' judy sings 'You've always come crying to me throughout the years
To mend another broken heart, to dry your selfish tears' which shows how Dick used her. There relationship was fake and toxic.
The relationship between Violet, Judy and Doralee is strong because they have all committed crimes like kidnapping Hart. they could have gone to the police a ratted them out but they don't. they also all go ahead with the plan and support eachother.
Revenge
The trio kidnap Mr Hart. They don't plan it, they rush it and decide it very quickly. This shows that the trio aren't evil or malicious, they decided to do this suddenly. If they had planned it for weeks and weeks the audience could have a dislike for them but because of the sudden decision the audience go along with it.
Violet, Judy and Doralee take over the work place and change it while Hart is tied up at his house while his wife Missy is abroad for 4 weeks.
Equality
Staff wellbeing took place when Hart wasn't in the office. Violet, Judy and Doralee thought that it was important for the work place to be better than it was before and make the workers feel happy, to be more productive and have a better workspace.
Female empowerment
The song 'Shine like the sun' shows the female empowerment throughout the song. the lyric 'Shine like the sun' shows that they wont let Hart push them down but they'll rise above him. "All see is tits but there's a heart under there" shows that all Mr Hart looks in a women for is her looks but when Doralee says this she is saying how she is more than her looks and has a heart and cares for people. She is saying this because there is more than meets the eyes and how people have judged her by the way she looks and not by the way she actcs.
