he was then re-elected as president of the US in 1792
he died in 1799 from pneumonia
he was elected as president of the US in 1789
he now has a Washington monument in honour of him
early life :
fought in the british army in the seven year war
inherited the family estates and married a wealthy widow and became very prosperous
born in colony of Virginia to family of wealthy landowners.
Saratroga and the entry of the French:
this reasurred the American people
Britains rivals became interested and joined the war against Britain in 1778
the Americans defeated a British army of 8,000 men at Saratoga
the continental army:
there was a huge difference in the two armies
{ e.g the british army were better trained, equipped and had the best experience
appointed commander-in-chief of the Continental Army in 1775 due to his military experience
the war of independence:
the Continental army won the Battle of Boston & captured cannons which they needed for war
Washington lost his first battle at Bunker Hill
in 1776 he was defeated in New York but gained 2 small victories at Princeton and Trenton
