Explorations
In 1513, the explorer Vasco Núñez de Balboa crossed the Isthmus of Panama and reached the Pacific Ocean.
n 1519, an expedition with a fleet of five ships and a crew of 280 men left
16th century, other explorers travelled around the interior of the continent.
n 1497, the Italian Giovanni Caboto, commissioned by the king of England, reached Newfoundland.
n 1500, the Portuguese Pedro Álvarez Cabral discovered the eastern coast of Brazil, the territory secured by Portugal.
