        This feels so weird to me because they want to create distance between Asian and American, but also want to "transform" Asians into Americans? Later in that paragraph, Palumbo-Liu says that understanding served to situate more exactly the Asian body in American space. It's a bit strange that there is this western initiated line drawn between the East and West, yet the West has the desire to mold Asians entering the West and continue to learn from tactics of the East.
